California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a series of new gun control laws.
What’s the deal: The new laws signed by Governor Newsom will significantly enhance the state’s gun control framework by expanding the scope of red flag laws, allowing courts to consider stalking, animal cruelty, and violent threats when issuing gun violence restraining orders. They will also tighten restrictions on firearm ownership for individuals with dismissed misdemeanor charges due to mental incompetency and for law enforcement officers involved in domestic violence, mandating the confiscation of firearms in such cases.

Additional measures: Additionally, the legislation addresses “ghost guns” by requiring law enforcement agencies to ban vendors from selling guns that were meant to be destroyed. Newsom also signed legislation banning fake flood and gunfire from active shooter drills in California’s public schools.
What the Governor is saying: In a statement, Governor Newsom said, “California won’t wait until the next school shooting or mass shooting to act. In the absence of congressional action, our state is once again leading the way by strengthening our nation-leading gun laws. Data shows that California’s gun safety laws are effective in preventing gun-related deaths — which makes the ongoing inaction and obstruction by politicians in the pocket of the gun lobby even more reprehensible.”
