Authorities in Kentucky have announced that a local county sheriff has been arrested in connection with the murder of a district judge at a courthouse in Whitesburg.
What’s the deal: According to police, District Judge Kevin Mullins was killed in his chambers at the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg, Kentucky by Sheriff Shawn Stines. The shooting occurred on Thursday, and preliminary investigations indicate that Sheriff Stines shot Mullins multiple times following an argument with the Judge. He ultimately surrendered to authorities.

Community reacts: Lead county prosecutor Matt Butler reacted to the news, saying, “We all know each other here. … Anyone from Letcher County would tell you that Judge Mullins and I married sisters and that we have children who are first cousins but act like siblings. For that reason, among others, I have already taken steps to recuse myself and my entire office.”
Governor statement: In a brief statement, Governor Andy Beshear said, “Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon. There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.”
