A Pakistani man has been arrested in Canada after plotting a terrorist attack at a Jewish center in New York City.

What’s the deal: According to the Department of Justice, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old Pakistani living in Canada, was arrested for plotting a terror attack at a Jewish center in Brooklyn, New York, in support of ISIS. Authorities say that Khan discussed his plans with undercover law enforcement and would either carry out the attack on the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel or on Yom Kippur (October 11). Khan reportedly sent photos of the location and talked about getting weapons and working with another ISIS supporter in the US.

Other intentions: According to Canadian authorities, Khan expressed interest in forming a “real offline cell” ISIS cell in the US to launch additional coordinated attacks on Jewish communities. When speaking with undercover officers, Khan said he was hoping to obtain rifles, ammunition, and knives to equip other ISIS sympathizers in the United States.

More on the arrest: Khan was arrested by Canadian authorities while trying to travel from Toronto to New York City to carry out an attack. After switching vehicles several times, he was intercepted in Quebec, about 12 miles from the US border. Khan was traveling with others and was caught before crossing into the US.

US official reacts: In a statement, Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “As I said to Canada’s Minister of Public Safety yesterday, we are deeply grateful to our Canadian partners for their critical law enforcement actions in this matter. Jewish communities — like all communities in this country — should not have to fear that they will be targeted by a hate-fueled terrorist attack. The Justice Department will continue to work closely with our domestic and international partners to aggressively counter the threat posed by ISIS and other terrorist organizations and their supporters.”
