Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the US and Western leaders to provide more air defense systems and long-range strike capabilities as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine.

What’s the deal: In recent weeks, Ukraine has faced a surge in Russian missile and drone attacks, causing heavy casualties and destruction. In one of the deadliest strikes, a missile hit Poltava, killing 55 and injuring hundreds (Russia claims over 500 Ukrainian soldiers died).

Zelensky’s call for more air defense systems: During a meeting at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Germany, Zelensky said, “We need more weapons to drive Russian forces off our land, and especially in the Donetsk region. It’s important that every support package that is announced is promptly put forward on the battlefield without delay.” He continued, “The world has enough air defense systems to ensure that Russian terror does not have results and I urge you to be more active in this war with us on air defense.”

Zelensky’s call for long-range strike capabilities: In addition to air defenses, President Zelensky also reiterated his calls for additional capabilities from Western allies to strike deeper into Russia. Zelensky said, “We need to have these long-range capabilities, not only on occupied territory of Ukraine but also on the Russian territory. So that Russia is motivated to seek peace.

Digging deeper: The United States has been cautious about providing Ukraine with more long-range strike capabilities, fearing it could escalate the war and lead to a direct confrontation with Russia. Initially, the US was firmly opposed to allowing Ukraine to use its weapons to strike targets inside Russia. However, it later revised its policy, permitting Ukraine to hit certain targets near the Russian border. Notably, these changes came after substantial pressure from other Western countries, particularly those in the EU.

Top US official reacts: During the meeting with President Zelensky in Germany, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, “We hear your urgency and we share it. Today, we’ll push even harder to step up our support for Ukraine. Secretary Austin also announced a $250 million package to Ukraine.
