The House task force investigating the assassination attempt on former President Trump has formally requested a trove of documents and interviews from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Secret Service.

What’s the deal: The House task force, led by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), has requested extensive documents and interviews from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Secret Service. The committee is seeking more details on the Secret Service’s intelligence process, site selection, and security planning for the rally where the assassination attempt on former President Trump occurred, as well as communications with other agencies and local law enforcement.

New interviews: The committee has also requested transcribed interviews with roughly ten key Secret Service agents involved in the event and transcripts from any interviews with DHS or Secret Service agents related to the incident. They also set a September 4th deadline for these documents, giving both agencies roughly a week to comply.

DHS & Secret Service react: In a statement, a DHS spokesman said, “DHS remains committed to working with the appropriate and relevant investigations into July 13th, including with the Congressional Task Force, to identify how this happened and how to prevent it from happening again. The Department responds to congressional requests directly via official channels and will continue to do so.”

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said the agency “has the highest level of respect for congressional oversight [and] is fully cooperating and will continue to cooperate.” He continued, “Since the attempted assassination of former President Trump, we have provided over 1,000 pages of responsive documentation to Congress and have made our employees available for interviews. Those efforts will continue as our desire to learn from this failure and ensure it never happens again is unwavering. We welcome any and all efforts towards that end.”
