An armed group linked to al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for an attack in central Burkina Faso that killed up to 200 people and injured at least 140.
What’s the deal: According to reports from the ground, an armed group linked to al-Qaeda, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), attacked Barsalogho, in central Burkina Faso. Civilians and soldiers digging protective trenches were targeted, resulting in up to 200 deaths and at least 140 injuries. The trenches, meant for defense, became mass graves for those digging them. This eight-hour assault is among the deadliest in Burkina Faso this year. The attackers seized weapons and a military ambulance before fleeing.
Government reacts: In a statement, Burkina Faso’s security minister, Mahamadou Sana, said, “In this backlash, we will make sure that the enemy knows that we will never again accept such barbarity on our territory. In any case, we want to assure the Burkinabe people that we are committed to protecting the Burkinabe and their property and will stand firm.”
Criticism of government: The government has faced significant criticism for its handling of the security crisis following the attack in Barsalogho, with many accusing the authorities of negligence and failing to protect civilians. One advocacy group, Collectif Justice pour Barsalogho, said, “We are shocked by the attitude of the government. They are not showing any real compassion or moral support commensurate with the shock felt by the martyred families of Barsalogho.”
Digging Deeper: Over the past decade, Burkina Faso has struggled with terrorism-related issues that often result in large-scale attacks targeting both military personnel and civilians. This violence has caused thousands of deaths and displaced over two million people, making it one of the most affected nations in the Sahel. Despite various efforts, including the presence of Russian foreign mercenaries, the violence is at an all-time high.
