General Motors has announced it will lay off over 1,000 salaried employees globally.

What’s the deal: General Motors is laying off 1,000 salaried employees in its software and services division, which includes areas like infotainment systems, the OnStar brand, and emerging markets such as vehicle subscriptions. Approximately 600 of these layoffs will occur in Warren, Michigan.

What GM is saying: In a brief statement, a spokeswoman for General Motors said, “As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact. As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward.”

Not just GM: These changes come amid broader industry trends where automakers, including GM, are making strategic cuts to reduce costs and streamline operations, particularly in response to concerns about a potential industry downturn and the need to invest heavily in emerging areas like electric vehicles.
