Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi denied leading a pressure campaign to urge President Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, insisting she made no such phone calls.

What’s the deal: In the week leading up to President Biden’s announcement that he would not stay in the race, multiple reports cited anonymous sources close to Pelosi and President Biden, claiming that she was pressuring him to step down. At one point, Pelosi reportedly had a “heated” call with Biden, demanding he show polling results that indicated he could still win the upcoming election. Additionally, Speaker Pelosi was allegedly calling various lawmakers, who subsequently came forward and urged the President to step down.

What Pelosi is saying: During an interview on CBS, Pelosi said, “No, I wasn’t a leader of any pressure party. I didn’t call one person. I did not call one person. I could always say to him, ‘I never called anybody.’ What I’m saying is…. I had confidence that the President would make the proper choice for our country, whatever that would be, and I said that. ‘Whatever that is, we’ll go with.” Pelosi also said she never saw a decline in President Biden’s health or mental fitness.”

Is Biden mad at Pelosi? Reports have surfaced that President Biden is allegedly “furious” with Nancy Pelosi, despite her public denials of leading any pressure campaign to persuade him to step aside. When asked about the reports, Pelosi said, “Well, he knows that I love him very much.”
