United & Delta Airlines have canceled their flights to Tel Aviv amid growing tensions and heightened regional security concerns.

What’s the deal: In a statement, United Airlines announced, “Beginning with this evening’s flight from Newark Liberty to Tel Aviv, we are suspending for security reasons our daily Tel Aviv service as we evaluate our next steps. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will make decisions on resuming service with a focus on the safety of our customers and crews. Delta Airlines also halted flights to Tel Aviv through Friday, stating, “Delta is continuously monitoring the evolving security environment and assessing our operations based on security guidance and intelligence reports.”

Other airlines that have announced suspensions: In addition to United & Delta, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Aegean Airlines, and MEA have rolled out cancelations.

What led to this: Flights in the region are being canceled due to rising tensions and security concerns after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. In response to his death, Hezbollah, Iran, and other allied groups have vowed to retaliate against Israel, fueling fears of an imminent and intensified war.

Warning from the US: The United States issued an updated travel advisory for US citizens in South Lebanon, advising them to leave immediately. The US cited various threats, including “crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, unexploded landmines, and the risk of armed conflict.”
