(Update 11:49 AM): Secret Service confirms Director Cheatle will testify on Monday
House Oversight Committee leaders James Comer (R-KY) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD) have called on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify about the assassination attempt on former President Trump.
Joint Statement: In a rare joint statement, the leaders said, “Americans have many serious questions about the historic security failures that occurred at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle must appear before the House Oversight Committee without delay on Monday, July 22 to answer our many questions and provide the transparency and accountability that Americans deserve and that are at the foundation of our government.”

Subpoena Also Issued: Before the joint statement, Chairman Comer subpoenaed Director Cheatle to force her appearance after alleged interference by DHS officials. According to Comer, officials within the Department of Homeland Security “appear to have intervened,” which he said put her attendance “in question.”
DHS Response: An official within the Department of Homeland Security responded to the initial subpoena for Director Cheattle, calling it “disappointing” that the committee “rushed” to issue it. The response also stated that the Secret Service Director “welcomes the opportunity to testify,” but needs to adjust the hearing date for “later in the week.”
Digging Deeper: The joint statement is a rare moment of agreement between Raskin and Comer, who have frequently been at odds over various committee issues. This comes as both are demanding answers following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which resulted in one death and three injuries. Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
