The inspector general for the Department of Homeland Security has officially announced an expansion of the investigation into the Secret Service following the attempted assassination of former President Trump.

In a statement, the DHS Inspector General’s office said their review would “examine the process implemented by the United States Secret Service to secure a political campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.” They added that their office also initiated a “review of the USSS Counter Sniper Team preparedness and operations. Our objective is to determine the extent to which the Secret Service Counter Sniper Team is prepared for, and responds to, threats at events attended by designated protectees.”

This development comes as questions continue to emerge about how the gunman was able to reach a nearby rooftop and take a shot at former president Donald Trump.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said her agency was “solely responsible” for the security measures implemented on Saturday. This followed a previous statement where the Secret Service suggested that local law enforcement failed to secure the building where the gunman was.

Despite acknowledging that the agency was solely responsible for Trump’s safety, Cheatle has resisted calls for her resignation. In addition, the White House has backed Cheatle, with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre saying President Biden has confidence in the director’s leadership.
