The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Gary Peters (D-MI), announced that his committee will hold a bipartisan investigation into the security breach at former President Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a shooting incident resulted in Trump being grazed by a bullet, one person killed, and at least two others injured.

Peters told reporters, “We’ve announced we’re going to be doing a … bipartisan investigation from the Committee on Homeland Security to look at the events that occurred and determine whether or not there were breaches that we need to close.”

Peters confirmed that he had already spoken with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and scheduled a briefing with the FBI. He said, “I am focused on starting this bipartisan investigation to find out exactly what happened and to make sure something like it doesn’t happen again. We have to make sure that the Secret Service and other law enforcement have the resources necessary to protect presidents and former presidents, as well as other elected officials.”

Digging Deeper:
The investigation and hearings will mirror the approach taken after the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol. Peters said, “We did a comprehensive assessment of security after January 6. In that investigation, we had a number of recommendations, and a significant number of those recommendations have now been incorporated into the security practices here at the Capitol. That template of what we did [for] Jan. 6, we’re going to do it again, for this horrific attack on the former president.”

Peters also expressed concerns about the increasing threats against members of Congress, referencing the current polarized climate and the vitriol on social media. He called for everyone to “take a step back and cool down,” stressing that the rhetoric on social media is troubling for all Americans.
