An American from Texas has died after he was electrocuted in a hot tub at a resort in northwest Mexico. The incident also left a woman seriously injured.

According to the attorney general’s office for the state of Sonora, the 43-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were in a Jacuzzi at a private condominium complex in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, when they were shocked by an electrical discharge around 8:30 PM on Tuesday. The man, identified as Jorge Guillen, and the woman, Lizette Zambrano, both from El Paso, Texas, were in the Jacuzzi at the Sonoran Sea Resort when the incident occurred.

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic aftermath, with people gathering around the hot tub, some screaming, while an individual attempted to perform CPR on Guillen. Family members of Zambrano have stated that she remains in critical condition. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support the couple had raised over $21,000 by Thursday morning.

According to KTSM of El Paso, a witness who tried to enter the Jacuzzi to assist the non-responsive couple was also shocked and immediately called for help. The attorney general’s office is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the electrical failure and plans to release more information as it becomes available.

Jim Ringquist, sales director for Sonoran Resorts Inc., said, “We are all terribly devastated by the tragedy that occurred at the Sonoran Sea Resort recently. Please accept heartfelt condolences from the Sonoran Resorts Company to the family and friends of both unfortunate deaths.” Ringquist also shared the unexpected death of the company’s CEO, Fernando Anaya, from a heart attack on Wednesday, which he said is “adding another unfortunate tragedy to the already sad situation.”
