During an interview with ABC News, President Biden said he would not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, and would accept the outcome of his son’s federal gun trial, which is taking place in Delaware.
Hunter Biden’s trial, which began this week in Wilmington, Delaware, involves felony charges alleging he lied on federal forms about his drug use to purchase a firearm illegally in 2018. Facing three counts, Hunter could be sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in prison and fined $750,000 if found guilty. The trial is expected to last about two weeks, with First Lady Jill Biden present during the initial proceedings.
In a statement issued on Monday, President Biden expressed his support for Hunter while refraining from commenting on the trial itself. “Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean. As the President, I don’t and won’t comment on pending federal cases, but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength.”
Hunter Biden’s trial comes shortly after former President Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment during the 2016 campaign. Trump has claimed that the trial was “rigged” and accusations of interference by the Biden administration. Addressing these claims, President Biden stated, “He’s trying to undermine it. He got a fair trial. The jury spoke.”
