The chairman of the House Oversight Committee has confirmed that his committee is still seeking evidence against former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci.

In an interview, House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) vowed to continue investigating Dr. Fauci and uncover any potential criminal wrongdoing. He said, “I think the American people saw the slick-talker who fooled America, who has probably done more harm to public education, he did more harm to our national debt and to our economy than any single human being in my lifetime. Hopefully, we can take his words today and continue to try to gather evidence and take steps to try to hold him in criminal wrongdoing, because I believe that the majority of Americans realize that Dr. Fauci made costly mistakes, he’s lied about them and he’s tried to cover it up.”

This development comes after Dr. Fauci, a prominent figure in the government’s COVID-19 response, testified on Monday before the GOP-led subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic. This was his first appearance since retiring in 2022. During the hearing, Fauci faced intense questioning from Republican critics who blamed him for the challenges Americans faced during the pandemic.

The committee has been investigating allegations against Fauci, particularly focusing on his former subordinates at NIAID. Despite extensive efforts, no concrete evidence of criminal activity has emerged. In his opening remarks, Fauci distanced himself from the actions of former NIAID senior adviser David Morens, stressing he had no knowledge of Morens’s controversial activities, including an email that suggested Dr. Fauci used a private email server that would not be subject to congressional oversight.

The hearing also saw Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) attacking Fauci directly, suggesting he should be prosecuted for “crimes against humanity.”
