X, formally known as Twitter, has updated its community guidelines to let users “share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior” as long as it’s labeled and not in a prominent location, such as a profile picture or banner.

Following the update, the @Safety account tweeted, “We have launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies to bring more clarity of our Rules and transparency into enforcement of these areas. These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies – but what we enforce against hasn’t changed.”

Historically, X has not explicitly banned pornographic content. The platform became a haven for NSFW creators after the launch of Twitter Blue (now X Premium), where creators could monetize their content similar to OnlyFans. This type of content presents a potential revenue stream for X, which has experienced a decline in ad sales since Elon Musk’s acquisition.

The new guidelines require users who “regularly post” NSFW content to mark their images and videos as sensitive. These rules encompass all forms of adult content, whether AI-generated, photographic, or animated. Users under 18 or those who haven’t provided their birth date will be restricted from viewing such material. Additionally, X’s policies prohibit content that promotes exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization, or harm to minors.

In March, X announced it would allow NSFW communities to label their content as “Adult” to prevent automatic filtering. The platform also mentioned plans to hide likes on profiles, a feature that previously revealed users’ engagement with adult or controversial content.
