Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised the United States after passing a $95 billion foreign aid package that allocates over $60 billion in aid to Ukraine.
In a statement, President Zelensky expressed his gratitude towards President Biden, Senate leaders, and Congressional members who supported the legislation. He said, “This vote reinforces America’s role as a beacon of democracy and the leader of the free world. I am also grateful to all Americans who continue to support Ukraine and recognize that the historical significance of this bill extends beyond politics. I equally appreciate President Biden’s support and look forward to the next military aid package matching the resoluteness that I always see in our negotiations.”
Zelensky also discussed the aid’s importance, noting that enhanced long-range capabilities, artillery, and air defense systems are crucial for Ukraine’s ongoing military efforts.
This comes after the Senate approved the aid package with a majority vote of 79-18. The package also benefits other countries, including Israel, Somalia, Sudan, and provides military assistance to Taiwan. It also includes humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer commented on the development, saying, “Today, the Senate sends a unified message to the entire world: America will always defend democracy in its hour of need. We tell our allies we will stand with you. We tell our adversaries don’t mess with us.” Schumer also praised Senate minority leader Mitch McConnel, saying, “against a lot of negative comments in his own party and within his own caucus, he knew the right thing to do and stuck with it.”
