The Department of Justice has announced a $138.7 million settlement with roughly 100 victims of sexual assault by Olympic Team USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

The settlement, revealed on Tuesday, addresses the 139 claims filed against the FBI for not adequately investigating the sexual abuse claims that spanned nearly two decades. This agreement concludes the final major lawsuit involving Nassar, who is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence for assaulting female athletes, including Olympic gymnasts, under the pretext of medical care.

In a statement, Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer said, “For decades, Lawrence Nassar abused his position, betraying the trust of those under his care and medical supervision while skirting accountability. These allegations should have been taken seriously from the outset. While these settlements won’t undo the harm Nassar inflicted, our hope is that they will help give the victims of his crimes some of the critical support they need to continue healing.”

This comes after the FBI has acknowledged various wrongdoings in its investigation into Nassar, which led to him targeting more victims for years. This has led to FBI Director Christopher Wray publicly apologizing.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Director Wray said, “I am especially sorry that there were people at the FBI who had their own chance to stop this monster back in 2015 and failed, and that is inexcusable, it never should have happened, and we are doing everything in our power to make sure it never happens again.”
