The Russian government has warned that the US’s deepening involvement in Ukraine could end like the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “Washington’s deeper and deeper immersion in the hybrid war against Russia will turn into a loud and humiliating fiasco for United States such as Vietnam and Afghanistan.” This statement came in response to the recent US decision to provide an additional $60.84 billion in aid to Ukraine.
The US House of Representatives passed a $95 billion legislative package on Saturday, showing broad bipartisan support. This package aims to provide security assistance not just to Ukraine, but also to Israel and Taiwan, despite criticism from some Republicans. Zakharova accused the United States of wanting Ukraine to “fight to the last Ukrainian,” including through actions that impact Russian civilians and sovereignty.
Zakharova added, “Russia will give an unconditional and resolute response” to the new aid package, noting that the Russian government viewed the US’s recent actions as an escalation in a “hybrid war.”
The recent bill passed by the House also includes provisions that would allow the government to seize Russian assets currently frozen due to sanctions and provide the funds to Ukraine. Zakharova slammed this as “theft.”
