Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is publicly calling for an independent commission to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding an Israeli airstrike that killed seven aid workers.

“The letter is simple: until you have an investigation, we should withhold,” Pelosi stated in an MSNBC interview, highlighting her endorsement of a proposal that seeks to pause weapon transfers pending an inquiry into the strike on World Central Kitchen (WCK).

Pelosi’s push aligns with increasing unrest within her party regarding Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza, marked by a significant loss of life over the past six months. The call for accountability gains further momentum following a preliminary finding from an Israeli investigation, which admitted that the strike was a mistake based on the incorrect assumption that the humanitarian convoy was transporting Hamas fighters.

Despite the severity of the situation, the Biden administration has not backed the demands for an independent investigation, a position that puts it at odds with several Democratic leaders, including Pelosi.
