Former CIA Director & Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called on Speaker Mike Johnson to support increased support for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
In a letter to Speaker Johnson, Pompeo, along with John Walters (who serves as the president of a Washington DC think tank), wrote, “None of our challenges at home will be made better by abandoning our allies at this time of great need, when they are staring down enemies of the free world. The United States remains the indispensable nation. And this is a Time for Choosing. We encourage you to lead, and we will stand with you.”
Pompeo and Walters warned that current geopolitical tensions and growing threats from countries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea make the situation more urgent. They said, “These conflicts are connected and directly impact the security of the United States. Americans are safer and more prosperous when we support our friends in thwarting our common enemies who work together against us across the globe. Americans are safer and more prosperous when we support our friends in thwarting our common enemies who work together against us across the globe.”
The call for increased aid is timed with Congress’s return to session, with Johnson expected to address Ukraine funding soon. The gridlock in Congress has resulted in significant concerns about the possibility of Ukraine not being able to defend itself from Russia. Recent assessments show that Russia has been regaining territory, resulting in Ukrainian forces retreating to new positions.
The White House has called on Speaker Johnson to put down the Ukraine aid bill for a vote, noting that there are enough Republicans in Congress who would support the bill.
