House Republicans have formally requested President Joe Biden’s testimony before the Oversight Committee on April 16 regarding their impeachment inquiry. The committee’s chair, James Comer (R-KY), extended the invitation for Biden to discuss, under oath, the origins of his family’s income and their business practices.
Comer wrote, “I invite you to participate in a public hearing at which you will be afforded the opportunity to explain, under oath, your involvement with your family’s sources of income and the means it has used to generate it.”
The backdrop to this request is the ongoing impeachment investigation amid skepticism about the presence of any incriminating evidence against Biden. Comer has mentioned the possibility of drafting a criminal referral instead of pursuing an impeachment vote. In contrast, the White House has dismissed the impeachment efforts as baseless, with spokesperson Ian Sams saying, “Comer knows 20+ witnesses have testified that POTUS did nothing wrong… This is a sad stunt at the end of a dead impeachment.”
Central to the inquiry are the challenged allegations regarding Biden’s past actions in Ukraine and questions surrounding a supposed $24 million from foreign entities to the Biden family and associates. Despite these accusations, testimonies from the majority of witnesses have largely discredited the claims of wrongdoing.
Republicans respond:
In a statement, the House Oversight Chairman Comer has said “The Bidens don’t sell a product or service or set of skills. The Bidens sell Joe Biden. That is their business.”
Democrats respond:
In a statement, the House Oversight Democrats said, “The GOP couldn’t find an impeachable offense, the evidence has been comically distorted and twisted, and now even right-wing media is calling out all the acrobatic contortions and comic evasions. The GOP impeachment inquiry has been a circus. Time to fold up the tent.”
