Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have expressed concern over Meta’s handling of content related to Palestine on its social media platforms.

In a letter directed at Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the senators criticized the company for not providing satisfactory information in response to previous inquiries about its moderation practices, especially concerning Arabic language and Palestine-related content. They wrote, “It is deeply troubling that Meta refuses to acknowledge and address the discriminatory nature of its content removal practices, despite being presented with a plethora of evidence to this effect.”

The senators also touched upon Meta’s internal review of its hate speech policies, especially concerning the term “Zionist.” Despite acknowledging the review, Meta has been critiqued for not offering details on how it could potentially curb legitimate political discourse. The Senators said, “These developments underscore the urgent need for improved transparency. It is imperative that Meta provide this information so the American people and their elected representatives can understand the impact of Meta’s policies.”

This comes after a Human Rights Watch report highlighted Meta’s suppression of over a thousand posts showing “peaceful support” for Palestinians.
