According to the US Ambassador to Iraq, ISIS continues to pose a significant threat to Iraq despite counterclaims from the Iraqi government.

In an interview, Ambassador Alina Romanowski said, “We both assess ISIS (Islamic State) is still a threat here, much, much diminished, but nevertheless, our work is essentially not done, and we want to ensure that Iraqi forces can continue the enduring defeat of ISIS.” Her comments came in the wake of a deadly attack by ISIS-K, the group’s Afghan branch, near Moscow.

Ambassador Romanowski added, “This event reminds us, ISIS is a common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere. That’s why the United States and Iraq share a commitment to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS, including by working together to shape the future of a strong bilateral U.S.-Iraq security partnership.”

Romanowski’s comments come amid an upcoming meeting between President Biden and Iraq’s Prime Minister on April 15. This meeting will be pivotal in determining the future of a US coalition that is tasked with preventing ISIS from taking over the country. Earlier this year, Iraq’s Prime Minister ordered the end of a US military presence in Iraq following a US drone strike that killed a prominent militia member accused of ordering attacks on US troops.
