Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner has announced that he is seeking to publicize information about the risks TikTok poses following a classified briefing to senators.

In a statement, Senator Warner said, “We just had a very powerful briefing. I’d like to get as much of the content declassified as possible. But I think there was a reason why when this brief was given on the House side afterward, they voted 50 to nothing to move the legislation forward.”

The legislation in question, the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, saw rapid advancement in the House, highlighting bipartisan support for addressing TikTok’s operational risks. Despite TikTok’s campaign against the bill, branding it as a “TikTok shutdown,” Warner and Senate Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Marco Rubio emphasized that the bill offers ByteDance a solution to divest TikTok, ensuring it can still operate in the United States.

Warner clarified the bill’s intent, saying, “It’s about the ability to make sure this creativity that’s happening on this platform can’t be manipulated by the Chinese Communist Party.” Senator Rubio also supported this stance and argued against declassifying the briefing’s content: “You don’t need to declassify anything to set those facts, and the facts are as simple as that. As long as ByteDance owns TikTok, that is a tool and a weapon that can be used against America in a time of conflict.”
