House Oversight Committee Democrats have initiated inquiries into SpaceX’s Starlink terminals’ alleged use by Russia in its war against Ukraine.
In a direct communication to SpaceX, Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Robert Garcia (D-CA) voiced their concerns, stating, “Russia’s misuse of Starlink terminals outside Russia’s internationally recognized borders poses a serious threat to Ukraine’s security, Ukrainian lives, and US national security.” According to the lawmakers, using Starlink (operated by SpaceX) is a breach of US sanctions and export controls.
The lawmaker’s letter follows claims by Ukraine’s main military intelligence, which said that Russian troops were utilizing Starlink terminals in parts of Ukraine.
Responding to the allegations, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk firmly denied the company’s involvement in supplying Starlink terminals to Russia. Musk added that any claims of SpaceX providing Russian troops with their products were “categorically false” and said, “to the best of our knowledge,” no Starlink terminals have been directly or indirectly sold to Russia.
