American Airlines has announced its decision to purchase a total of 260 new jets from leading manufacturers Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer. The move aims to boost the carrier’s capacity in response to the surging demand for air travel, to obtain more fuel-efficient aircraft to capitalize on the booming market while managing operational costs.
The order consists of 85 Airbus A321neo jets, 85 Boeing 737 MAX 10s, and 90 Embraer E175 aircraft. American Airlines has secured options and purchase rights for an additional 193 planes. Despite this significant expansion, the airline anticipates maintaining its previously projected capacity and capital expenditure levels. This strategy comes as airlines worldwide vie for limited production slots, especially for Airbus models, following a recent incident with a Boeing 737 MAX jet that raised safety concerns.

American’s commitment to the Boeing 737 MAX 10, currently awaiting regulatory approval, highlights the airline’s confidence in Boeing’s offerings. “We deeply appreciate American Airlines’ trust in Boeing and its confidence in the 737 MAX family,” stated Stan Deal, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Meanwhile, competitor United Airlines is reportedly negotiating with Airbus for a substantial order, potentially replacing its Boeing MAX 10s.
