A US couple missing for over a week following the hijacking of their catamaran in the Eastern Caribbean by escaped prisoners are likely deceased, according to local authorities.

Grenada’s Police Commissioner Don McKenzie reported that the prisoners took control of the vessel “Simplicity,” carrying Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry, after their escape on February 18. McKenzie indicated that evidence suggests the couple was disposed of during the journey between Grenada and St. Vincent, noting the last sighting of the couple was on the night of February 18, with their boat later observed departing Grenada at an unusually high speed.

The hijackers, identified as Ron Mitchell, Trevon Robertson, and Abita Stanislaus, were apprehended in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with Grenadian officials joining the investigation efforts. These individuals had previously escaped from custody while facing serious charges, including robbery with violence and, in Mitchell’s case, sexual assault offenses. Following their capture, authorities found the “Simplicity” abandoned with evidence suggesting possible violence but no bodies on board.

The suspects have been charged with immigration violations in St. Vincent, pleading guilty and awaiting sentencing. Police also say that additional charges are pending.
