The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced its plan to allocate $500,000 from forfeited Russian assets to assist Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.

The funds were acquired from a dismantled illegal procurement network aimed at importing a high-precision, US-origin machine tool into Russia for defense and nuclear proliferation purposes. According to US officials, the piece of equipment, a jig grinder, is capable of being used in the development of weaponry for Russia’s defense sectors.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco highlighted the significance of this transfer, stating, “This is an incremental step toward justice and restoration. But it is a necessary step. And it blazes a new trail towards combatting Russia’s ongoing brutality.”

Due to legal constraints, the money will be first sent to Estonia due to legal constraints that prevent the US from directly transferring the funds to Ukraine. This move marks a new effort by the US to provide funds directly to Ukraine amidst stalled legislation in Congress aimed at offering additional support to Ukraine and other US allies.
