Next week, House Republicans will commence the first of four hearings aimed at the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The House Homeland Security Committee, under the leadership of Chair Mark Green (R-Tenn.), will begin its proceedings on January 10, focusing on the impact of illegal migration in the Midwest, termed as “havoc in the heartland.”

This series of hearings results from a comprehensive review of Mayorkas’s border management, sparked by Green’s July allegations of “dereliction of duty.” The timing coincides with a GOP border visit and aligns with escalating calls within the party for Mayorkas’s removal, a sentiment that has been simmering since the Republicans gained House control.

The push gained momentum with a November motion by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to prompt an impeachment vote. “Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Secretary Mayorkas’ decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress, and that his failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability,” Green stated, referencing a bipartisan House vote that escalated the impeachment discourse.

Secretary Mayorkas, in a recent MSNBC appearance, committed to cooperating with the inquiry while emphasizing his ongoing duties, including legislative negotiations on immigration policy. He outlined his active involvement in seeking solutions, despite the accusations of dereliction and legal violations.

Mayorkas also defended his handling of the border, saying, “I use a lens of reasonableness in defining operational control. Are we maximizing the resources we have to deliver the most effective results? And under that definition, we are doing so very much to gain operational control.”
