Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Saturday that hackers have been publishing his personal data on the dark web for days, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is pinning it on pro-Russian hackers.

Getting into it: Tajani, who is also Italy’s deputy prime minister, said on X that the hackers want more details on him and his family and are offering money for them, exposing him to new threats and intimidation. He said he was targeted because of Italy’s support for Ukraine and because of the Foreign Ministry’s push to strengthen its cybersecurity.

He didn’t say what was leaked, but indicated the attacks haven’t stopped, and said the ministry is working with allies on its response. Reuters reported seeing screenshots that put Tajani’s photo on a dark web list of 18 “citizens hostile to the Russian Federation,” alongside several cybersecurity experts. Meloni said selling private information on government officials is “a matter of grave concern” and also criticized the circulation of what she called “false images” that she said came from opposition figures, without saying what they showed.

The Kremlin hasn’t commented, and Russia has long denied hacking other countries.

This all comes as Europe faces a wave of suspected Russian-linked “hybrid attacks,” including drone incursions and fake bomb threats that have rerouted flights.
