Elon Musk’s xAI and SpaceX have been sued by Mississippi residents who say a power plant fueling nearby data centers is blasting noise that has eroded their health and home values.

Getting into it: Three residents filed the proposed class action, estimated to cover more than 10,000 people, in federal court in Oxford, naming xAI, SpaceX and xAI subsidiary MZX Tech, though Musk himself is not a defendant. The suit alleges that gas-fired turbines running near Southaven have hammered the surrounding area with “omnipresent and inescapable” noise and vibrations since the middle of last year, bleeding through walls and creating a public nuisance the companies negligently failed to curb.

Arguing that “the artificial intelligence boom is wreaking havoc on communities,” the residents want compensation for the mental strain and the drop in their home values, plus they’re asking the court to make xAI cough up an unnamed share of its profits.

The plant sits just south of Memphis, where xAI poured north of $20 billion into building it with support from Republican Governor Tate Reeves. The turbines at this facility feed energy to data centers scattered across the area. As of now, the number of turbines has climbed to 47, up from 18 a year earlier, and while the company built a sound barrier to dampen the noise, residents say it has done little to help.

Robert Wiygul, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said homes “are supposed to be a sanctuary for us against the world,” but that being “invaded by noise 24 hours a day” strips away the basic peace of a decent life.

xAI and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
