Israel and Iran have traded direct strikes for the first time since a ceasefire paused the war between them in April.
Getting into it: This shit all kicked off after Israel launched strikes in Lebanon on Sunday, bombing Beirut’s southern Dahiyeh district in what Netanyahu said was a response to Hezbollah launching missiles at Israel. Iran answered by firing a salvo of roughly a dozen ballistic missiles at Israel (almost all intercepted or landing in open areas). This was a big deal as it marked the first direct attack since the April 8 ceasefire.
Israel then hit back early Monday, striking military sites across western and central Iran, with explosions rocking Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and Karaj as it targeted missile launch sites, drone plants, the country’s main airport and a petrochemical plant. On top of all this, Yemen’s Houthi rebels lobbed a missile of their own at Israel (their first since the truce) and vowed to go after ships in the Red Sea they consider tied to Israel.
What made the strikes especially notable was that they defied Trump directly. A senior US official said the president had called Netanyahu on Sunday, urging him not to retaliate immediately, and believed he had “got Bibi to hold off for the time being,” only for Israel to hit Iran anyway. Trump, who told the Financial Times before the attack that “I call all the shots. He doesn’t call the shots,” insisted the exchange wouldn’t derail his pursuit of a deal, while making clear that Israel’s earlier Lebanon strikes were not coordinated with Washington and that “I’m not happy about it.” The White House would not say whether Monday’s strikes on Iran were carried out with US knowledge.
Israel’s ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, said “everyone has had enough of this maniacal Iranian regime,” and an IDF spokesman said that Tehran had “made a grave mistake.” For its part, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said its attack was a “warning,” named Israel’s Ramat David air base among its targets, and threatened broader regional attacks if Israel kept striking Lebanon.
This all comes as President Trump took to Truth Social this morning and wrote, “Israel and Iran must immediately stop shooting” at one another. He also said that both Israel and Iran were “looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE!” and that “Final negotiations on Peace are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.”
