Multiple US lawmakers within the republican party are demanding a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by a federal immigration officer.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: Over the weekend, a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center who was participating in a protest against federal immigration enforcement. Shortly after the shooting, federal officials claimed that Pretti “approached” agents with a handgun and posed a threat. However, bystander video appears to show him holding only a phone and attempting to record or assist others before being pepper-sprayed, tackled, and fatally shot while pinned to the ground. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and other Trump administration officials went further, labeling Pretti a “domestic terrorist” and defending the agent’s use of force while emphasizing that he had a gun.

What’s going on now: In a notable development, multiple Republican lawmakers are distancing themselves from the Trump administration’s hard-line narrative and demanding transparency. Sen. Bill Cassidy, facing a Trump-backed primary challenger, called the shooting “incredibly disturbing” and said that “the credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake,” urging a “full joint federal and state investigation.” Sen. Thom Tillis, not seeking reelection, echoed those sentiments, stating that “any administration official who rushes to judgment and tries to shut down an investigation before it begins is doing an incredible disservice to the nation and to President Trump’s legacy.” Sen. Lisa Murkowski was even more direct, stating that “ICE agents do not have carte blanche in carrying out their duties” and stressed that Pretti lawfully carrying a gun “does not justify federal agents killing an American,” particularly after he appeared to be disarmed.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, chair of the National Governors Association, openly questioned the broader intent of the Trump administration’s immigration tactics, asking, “What is the goal right now? Is it to deport every single non-US citizen? I don’t think that’s what Americans want.” On CNN’s “State of the Union,” he said the shooting was a “real tragedy” and added, “Nobody likes the feds coming to their states.”

Meanwhile, Democrats have sharply condemned both the shooting and the administration’s response. Former President Bill Clinton called the events in Minneapolis “horrible scenes that I never thought would take place in America,” accusing the Trump administration of lying and impeding investigations. Democratic senators, led by minority leader Chuck Schumer, have vowed to block funding for DHS in protest.
