According to an explosive report by The Wall Street Journal, the United States successfully orchestrated a covert operation to help Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado escape the country.

Getting into it: Per the Journal, the United States, along with select members of Nicolás Maduro’s own regime, facilitated Machado’s departure from Venezuela after more than a year in hiding. She fled by boat from the western coast of the country to the nearby Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao. The high-risk operation was kept secret to protect Machado’s life, as Veneuzelan intelligence agencies have been running down leads in an effort to capture her. The escape was timed just days before the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, where she had been announced as this year’s winner.

Machado’s decision to leave came under extreme circumstances, with reports indicating that “many people” risked their lives to make the journey possible. Though she was unable to arrive in time due to weather delays at sea, she sent a voice message confirming she was safe and en route.

Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, accepted the award on her behalf in a speech before the Norwegian royal family and global dignitaries, stating that her mother “will never give up” and that Venezuelans would one day “return home” to a free nation.

As of now, there’s been no comment from the Venezuelan government.
