A top Iranian official has warned that President Trump’s Middle East policies risk igniting a regional conflict.
Getting into it: In an interview on NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said,“President Trump has said that his administration has come to create peace, but the path that they have embarked upon will set fire to the entire region.” Pezeshkian accused Trump of inflaming tensions through military aggression, particularly referencing US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, which he described as a “grave betrayal of diplomacy.” He claimed the strikes, which occurred during a 12-day war with Israel created “a grievous blow upon international trust and the very prospect of peace in the region.”
Pezeshkian also criticized Trump’s calls for a peaceful resolution to the nuclear dispute, saying, “One cannot simultaneously bomb a country while engaging in diplomatic negotiations and speak of diplomacy.”
During the interview, Pezeshkian also discussed his own injury sustained during the June conflict, revealing that he suffered a hematoma near his knee, but dismissed it as insignificant: “It wasn’t anything special. We dropped the needed liquid and blood, and after that, we got over it.” He added, “We are not afraid of death and martyrdom. We have lived our lives. I have lived my life.”
Despite the heightened tensions, Pezeshkian insisted that Iran does not seek war but will defend itself forcefully if attacked. “We’re not afraid of war. We do not seek war, but whomever attacks us, we will do our utmost to give them the strongest answer.”
The United States and Israel have not responded to Pezeshkian’s interview.
