Elon Musk has officially announced the formation of the “America Party,” a new political movement he says will challenge the “corrupt and fiscally irresponsible” two-party system.
Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, Elon Musk previously warned that he would launch a new political party if President Trump’s “big beautiful bill” became law. Musk, once a major backer and adviser to Trump, voiced strong opposition to the bill, arguing it would add trillions to the national debt. Some political analysts speculated that Musk’s opposition may have been fueled by a part of the bill that would scale back federal subsidies for electric vehicles (an industry where Musk has massive financial stakes through Tesla).

What’s going on now: In a notable development, Elon Musk confirmed he would move forward with creating the “America Party.” In a post on X, Musk wrote, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Musk outlined a focused political strategy rather than launching a full national campaign immediately. He suggested the America Party would “laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” alluding to the idea that this targeted approach could provide enough leverage to act as a swing bloc in Congress. This, he argued, would allow the party to block legislation that he sees as financially irresponsible and ensure that contentious laws “serve the true will of the people.”
Musk also hinted at plans to mobilize supporters around primary challenges to lawmakers who supported Trump’s bill, warning they would “lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
This all comes as Musk’s plan faces significant legal, logistical, and political hurdles that have historically made third-party efforts in the US hard to pull off. To formalize the America Party, he would need to register with the Federal Election Commission, create a national party structure, and meet ballot access requirements across all 50 states (many of which demand large signature thresholds, early deadlines, and legal vetting).
