Two Republican lawmakers have announced their intentions to introduce a bill that would make it a felony to intentionally modify the weather by releasing chemicals or substances into the atmosphere.

Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, many countries around the world have confirmed they have the scientific capability to induce limited forms of weather modification, primarily through a process called cloud seeding. This technique involves dispersing substances like silver iodide or dry ice into the atmosphere to encourage precipitation and is used in places such as the United States, China, and the United Arab Emirates to combat drought, reduce hail, or improve snowfall. While scientifically valid, cloud seeding operates only on small, localized scales and cannot generate storms or manipulate large weather systems—an assessment supported by the US Government Accountability Office, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Despite these assessments, many conspiracies online persist, claiming that governments orshadoworganizations are creating devastating natural disasters like hurricanes or floods through secret geoengineering programs. These claims, however, have been widely debunked by scientists, who argue that such advanced weather control technologies do not exist.

What’s going on now: In a notable development, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Congressman Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) have announced their intention to introduce a federal bill aimed at banning weather modification practices, including cloud seeding and geoengineering. The proposed legislation would make it a felony offense toinject, release, or disperse chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for the express purpose of altering weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity. This bill mirrors Florida’s Senate Bill 56, which was signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis in June 2025 and imposes harsh penalties, including up to five years in prison and a $100,000 fine, for unauthorized weather modification efforts.

In a statement, Congresswoman Greene said, “I am introducing a bill that prohibits the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for the express purpose of altering weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity. It will be a felony offense. I have been researching weather modification and working with the legislative counsel for months writing this bill. It will be similar to Florida’s Senate Bill 56. We must end the dangerous and deadly practice of weather modification and geoengineering.” She added, “No person, company, entity, or government should ever be allowed to modify our weather by any means possible!!”

According to Greene and Burchett, the bill is intended to halt what they describe as a dangerous and unregulated industry that manipulates natural weather patterns. Greene has previously suggested that weather events—such as the deadly 2024 Hurricane Helene—may be the result of government-directed weather manipulation.
