President Trump’s border czar has threatened to arrest California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, if they interfere with ongoing federal immigration enforcement operations in Los Angeles.

Some shit you should know before you read: If you haven’t been following along, there’s been large-scale protests and some unrest across Los Angeles in response to a wave of federal immigration raids carried out by ICE agents. What began as peaceful demonstrations escalated after viral videos showed confrontations between protesters and officers. President Trump responded by deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to the city, accusing California officials of failing to maintain order. In turn, Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass have condemned the federal intervention, accusing Trump of using the crisis to provoke unrest and manufacture a political “spectacle,” warning that the deployment would only further inflame tensions on the ground.

What’s going on now: In a notable development, Trump border czar Tom Homan warned that immigration enforcement in Los Angeles will continue daily and that even elected officials could face arrest if they interfere. Speaking to NBC News, Homan declared, “I’m telling you what, we’re going to keep enforcing law every day in LA. Every day in LA, we’re going to enforce immigration law. I don’t care if they like it or not.

When asked if he believed the Governor of California or the mayor of LA would be arrested if they hinder operations, Homan said, “I’ll say it about anybody. You cross that line, it’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It’s a felony to impede law enforcement doing their job.”

While he stopped short of accusing either official of having already crossed that line, he left the door open for future legal action, adding, “I don’t believe she’s crossed the line yet,” in reference to Mayor Bass, “but we’ll ask DOJ to prosecute” if she or others do.
