A top Ukrainian official has confirmed that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is actively working to secure a meeting with President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming G7 summit in Canada.
Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, the war in Ukraine is currently at a stalemate, with Russia making small but steady territorial gains at significant costs (particularly in the eastern Donbas region and near Kharkiv). Since Trump came into office, Ukraine has not received any new large-scale military aid packages from the US, leaving its forces increasingly outgunned and short on critical munitions. In response, Kyiv has intensified its asymmetric warfare strategy by systematically targeting Russian infrastructure — including oil refineries, logistics hubs, railways, and power stations — aiming to strain the Russian economy and disrupt its war effort. These deep strikes into Russian territory are designed not only to degrade military capabilities but also to impose long-term economic pressure.

What’s going on now: In a notable development, Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Chief of Staff, confirmed that preparations are underway for a potential meeting between President Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, set for June 15–17. While speaking on TV, Yermak said, “Our visit was a preparation, including, I believe, for the meeting between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada, which will start in 10 days.” He emphasized that the Ukrainian delegation’s recent trip to Washington was “one of the important steps in preparing for this conversation.”
During the Washington visit, Ukrainian officials discussed not only continued military assistance but also economic cooperation agreements, including plans to purchase advanced weaponry. According to Yermak, “President Zelensky clearly outlined our position: under the signed agreement on economic cooperation, we are also ready to buy some of the equipment, especially missile defense systems, etc.”
This comes as Zelenskyy’s attendance at the G7 was made possible by a formal invitation from newly appointed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who extended the offer shortly after taking office earlier this year.
