Elon Musk personally ordered the slowdown of the military version of Starlink used by Ukraine’s armed forces, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, despite Musk publicly saying only the US military and President Trump could make that call.
Getting into it: Citing US officials and people familiar with the matter, the Journal reported that Musk limited how fast Ukrainian equipment could move while staying connected to Starshield last week, knocking some of Ukraine’s strike and interceptor drones out of action. CBS News confirmed the report, saying Musk talked to several people in the administration before giving the order to get clarity on Trump’s thinking, and doesn’t want SpaceX looking like it’s cashing in on the war.
Two people told the Journal that Musk and Trump discussed the slowdown soon after it became public, while one said Musk spoke with Trump and other senior officials before imposing it, though some US officials believe Musk acted on his own. It’s still unclear how the order was carried out.
Amid the blowback from EU officials (with whom SpaceX has contracts with), Musk posted that Starshield is “owned and controlled by the US government” and that any limits are “decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS.” Trump later said on Monday, “I don’t know who it was, but I’d like to find out.”
Musk, SpaceX and the White House have not responded to the report, and it wasn’t mentioned on SpaceX’s earnings call, held minutes after the story was published. Zelensky has blamed the slowdown on “a message from American government,” saying “people will die,” and a bipartisan group of senators has asked the Pentagon’s inspector general to investigate.
This all comes as both Musk and Trump have turned sharply on Zelensky, with Musk posting “Time for Zelensky to go” and Trump calling him “not a good guy for us to deal with.”
