Elon Musk has given more than $276 million to Republican super PACs and other groups since July, making him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterms by a wide margin as the GOP battles to keep control of Congress.
Getting into it: A spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC confirmed the figures, which The New York Times broke ahead of Thursday’s federal filing deadline. They bring his total giving this election cycle to about $366 million, more than the roughly $290 million he spent helping elect Trump in 2024. The largest share, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing GOP Senate candidates. The donation ranks among the biggest single political gifts in US history and is a single-quarter record for the group from any one donor.
Musk also gave more than $76 million to his own America PAC; $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund for House Republicans; $10 million each to the Republican Governors Association and Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton; and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association. A portion of his money went to groups that aren’t required to name their donors.
America PAC put nearly 3,000 paid canvassers in the field last week and has knocked on about 6.5 million doors. It has spent more than a third of its money on the Texas Senate race, where its canvassing literature accuses Democrat James Talarico of a “radical trans agenda” and its top ad hits him over past comments that “God is nonbinary.”
The spending marks a reversal for Musk, who said in May 2025 that “in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” shortly before a public falling-out with Trump. The two have since reconciled, with Trump awarding Musk the National Medal of Science last week and calling him “our modern-day Thomas Edison.” Looking ahead, America PAC also confirmed for the first time that it plans to stay active in the 2028 presidential race.
This all comes as Republicans hold a major cash advantage heading into the Nov. 3 midterms, even as Trump faces some backlash over increasing prices and the Iran war.
