Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned the UN General Assembly on Wednesday that artificial intelligence could begin making decisions on the battlefield as early as next year, and urged world leaders to end the wars already underway before that happens.

Getting into it: Zelensky called for slowing down the development of AI weapons, saying some of AI’s biggest backers believe the technology will eventually move beyond the digital world and start “shaping atoms.” “We need to slow it down before we reach the next stage, because as early as next year, there is already a real possibility that AI, not only people, will begin to decide what happens on the battlefield, and we need peace before we reach that point,” Zelensky said.

His warning follows an August New York Times report on a Russian drone strike in Zaporizhzhia that killed three people, including a 19-year-old university student. Experts and military officials told the Times the drone ran on Nvidia minicomputers anyone can buy, and used them to pick its targets.

The city’s air defense commander, Col. Serhiy Minaiev, told the Times that within a few years the world will be living in a “Terminator” movie, adding, “Machines are making decisions to strike.”

Zelensky’s AI warning puts him at odds with President Trump, who used his own UN speech Tuesday to reject calls to slow AI development as a “globalist scheme,” announced the US will now officially call AI “super intelligence” and said the country is “leading now over China by a lot.”
