Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of supporting Hamas in a video posted Tuesday, just days before he is set to address the UN General Assembly in the city.

Getting into it: Hours earlier, CNN had released clips from Mamdani’s sit-down with Christiane Amanpour, in which New York’s first Muslim mayor again called Netanyahu a war criminal and “an architect of a horrific genocide of the Palestinian people.” In the video, Netanyahu addressed Mamdani directly and said his UN trip would be about telling the truth about Israeli soldiers and about the mayor himself.

“Shame on you, Mr. Mamdani,” Netanyahu said. “Shame on you for supporting the Hamas terrorist monsters who butchered our people. Shame on you for inciting riots against New York Jews.”

Mamdani has condemned Hamas as a terrorist group and called its Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel “a horrific war crime.” Critics, however, point to his ties to Queens imam Fadhel Al-Sahlani, who most recently described the Oct. 7 attack in a positive light. Mamdani has said he disagrees with the imam’s comments about Hamas.

During the campaign, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa also slammed Mamdani for posing with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, whom Cuomo called an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Separately, Fox News reported last year that Mamdani’s father, Mahmood Mamdani, sits on the advisory council of the Gaza Tribunal, an anti-Israel group, and once wrote that suicide bombing should be understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized as barbarism.

Asked about the video at a press conference Tuesday, Mamdani said Netanyahu’s accusation “is not true. What we do know to actually be the truth when it comes to the prime minister is that he is the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The ICC issued that warrant in November 2024, and Netanyahu has called the charges bogus. Mamdani promised during his campaign to have the NYPD arrest Netanyahu if he came to New York, but later walked that back after the city’s Law Department told him the city lacked that authority.
