President Trump has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop striking Russian diesel infrastructure over concerns that it’s driving a global fuel shortage and pushing prices to record highs.

Getting into it: “Mr. Zelensky has to do one thing: He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump told reporters at the Amgen Irish Open, held at his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland. “Let him go after targets, but not diesel fuel, because he’s causing a shortage of diesel. We spoke to Mr. Zelensky about it. There are plenty of other targets. Don’t hit diesel fuel. That’s hurting the world.” He also made clear where he placed the blame: “This isn’t done by the Middle East, this is done by what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine.”

Despite the pressure, Ukraine is not slowing down. Its forces hit refineries in Krasnodar Krai and Tatarstan on Sunday, hours before Trump spoke, as part of a months-long drone campaign that has cut Russian fuel production and caused shortages inside one of the world’s largest oil producers.

Ukraine has maintained that Russian refineries are legitimate military targets because Russia’s oil industry funds and fuels the invasion, and has pointed out that Russia regularly strikes Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

The standoff comes as diesel hits a record national average, which AAA listed at $6.09 a gallon Friday and $6.17 by Sunday, up 65% since the US and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28 and up from $3.71 a year ago. Regular gas is at $4.31, up about 45% since the war began. Diesel powers the trucks, trains and ships that move freight, along with farm equipment, so higher costs directly impact the price of groceries and other everyday goods.
