Russia has condemned the deployment of a US missile system to Norway, warning that the sites and their command-and-control centers are now on Moscow’s target list if a war ever kicks off.

Getting into it: The system in question uses Mk-41 launchers, which can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles. US media reported the delivery in August, and Russia says missiles launched from Norway could reach a substantial part of western Russia, including Moscow.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “For those who made the decision in Washington and Oslo to deploy these systems in Norway, it should not come as a surprise that, as part of Russia’s response measures, the locations where American systems and their control facilities are deployed become a subject of special attention from Russia’s strategic deterrence forces.”

She added that those forces have already worked the sites into their targeting math and called the arrival of American intermediate-range capability in Europe one more NATO move in a pattern she said keeps knocking the region off balance.

Russia also used the deployment to write off arms control talks. “Steps such as the deployment in Europe of U.S. ground-based intermediate-range missiles that pose a threat to the Russian Federation ‘reset to zero’, to put it mildly, the conditions for constructive dialogue with the U.S. on strategic issues,” the ministry said. Trump has pushed for a new agreement covering both Russia and China, which the ministry dismissed as unrealistic.

This all comes as Norway builds up its own forces along the Arctic border it shares with Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the buildup “cannot but be perceived as a threat to Russia’s security” and that Russian agencies are already taking measures in response.
