Another Russian official has warned that Russia could strike UK military targets inside and outside Ukraine if Kyiv keeps firing UK-made cruise missiles into Russian territory.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: Earlier this week, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced during his first foreign trip as prime minister that he would hand Ukraine the secret designs and manufacturing know-how behind the Anglo-French Storm Shadow cruise missile so Ukraine can build the weapon itself. France has already licensed its side of the technology. The Kremlin called it adding “fuel to the fire,” and an advisor to Putin said the UK could be attacked by Russia soon. A day before Thursday’s warning, Russia accused Ukraine of using British Storm Shadows to hit a shopping center in Donetsk, the eastern Ukrainian city Moscow controls, and said the strike left civilians hurt, kids among them. Ukraine did not comment, and Reuters could not verify the claim.

What’s going on now: Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a Moscow briefing Thursday that London sits “one step away” from a point where Moscow would hold it legally responsible for what she described as terrorism aimed at Russian civilians.

“We have repeatedly warned that any British military installations and equipment in Ukraine and beyond its borders could be targeted in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory carried out using British weapons,” Zakharova said.

“We propose that the British leadership once again carefully analyze the situation and immediately, in the most resolute and unequivocal manner, abandon the hostile, aggressive line which can only… create the risk of the conflict escalating to an entirely new level,” she added, predicting “inevitable catastrophic consequences.”

Zakharova also said the UK and France are both “playing with fire,” took a shot at Burnham for choosing Kyiv over Washington for that first trip, and accused Downing Street of an “obsessive anti-Russian agenda.” When a British journalist asked whether striking UK territory could trigger NATO’s Article 5 and whether Moscow had a target list, Zakharova accused the British press of hypocrisy. “You only care about international law when you feel threatened,” she said, and did not withdraw the threat.

This all comes as the UK is doubling down rather than backing off. In a statement, the UK Ministry of Defense said, “Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and we are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin’s illegal invasion. Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this government to stand against Russian aggression, in Ukraine and against the UK and our allies.”
