President Trump has announced that the US will carry out a heavy round of strikes on Iran after a surprise ballistic missile attack that gave American forces in the Middle East just minutes to react.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: Over the weekend, the US stopped strikes on Iran amid reporting from The New York Times that Trump had shelved plans to escalate over dwindling stockpiles of Patriot interceptors and other air defense munitions in the region. To the contrary, Trump dismissed the idea that stockpile depletion had anything to do with it and it was more related to ongoing talks between the US and Iran. Despite the holding of attacks from both sides, Iran launched ballistic missiles towards the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, a central hub for US forces in the region. The Revolutionary Guard claimed the launch in a statement carried by Iranian state media. US Central Command called it an attempted surprise attack and said every missile was intercepted. Jordan’s military put the count at five, all of them knocked down, and reported no casualties or damage.

What’s going on: In an interview with Fox News, Trump vowed that there would be a devastating response to the attack from Iran. He said, “We’ll be hitting them hard. They’re going to get a beating. We are going to beat the fucking shit out of them.”

Later, at an Oval Office event, Trump was asked whether Iran was behind drone strikes that set two natural gas vessels on fire at the Egyptian port of Damietta. He shrugged it off as more of the same and said things were going to straighten out.

This all comes as Saudi Arabia appears to be getting more involved in the fight. US and Saudi warplanes flew joint runs against a string of weapons depots and supply sites across eastern Iraq on Tuesday stateside, which CENTCOM framed as payback for more than 30 drone attacks over three days by Iran-aligned groups against US troops and Saudi energy infrastructure.

The Popular Mobilization Forces said at least 20 of its fighters were killed and 32 wounded. Six Iranian advisers died in the strikes too, according to two Iraqi militia officials who spoke to the Associated Press. The Saudi Defense Ministry said the kingdom is not looking to escalate but will answer any aggression.

The strikes really pissed off Iraq, with the office of Iraqi President Nizar Amidi calling the strikes “a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty,” and the country’s National Security Council said they landed while the Iraqi government was still talking with the relevant parties about the Saudi and American complaints, and that innocent people were killed and wounded. The strikes also led to Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s suspending his upcoming Thursday visit to Saudi Arabia.
