A 23-year-old British TikTok influencer could be executed in Dubai after being charged with murder over a stabbing she says was self-defense.

Getting into it: Brooke George, a former department store worker from the UK, was arrested in the early hours of June 22 and charged with premeditated murder over the fatal stabbing of a man she met online, according to the advocacy group Detained in Dubai. If convicted, she could face death by firing squad, though such sentences in the UAE are often commuted to lengthy prison terms. The British Foreign Office said it was supporting George and her family and was in contact with local authorities.

George, who has nearly 100,000 TikTok followers, met the man on Facebook and flew out to Dubai once their relationship developed online, describing her first week-long visit as “the time of my life.” But on a second trip, the group said, his behavior changed, becoming “increasingly controlling and abusive.” She alleges she found out he’d only paid for a one-way flight, saw “disturbing videos” on his computer, and told friends “things weren’t right.”

According to her account, after a night at a bar he assaulted her in a car and again at his apartment, withheld her passport, and punched her in the face when she begged for it back. “Brooke says she feared for her life and, reaching for a kitchen knife within her grasp, acted in self defense,” the group said. Her mother said that when they spoke afterward, her daughter was “absolutely terrified” with one eye “badly swollen and beginning to close.”

As of now, there’s been no comment from the UAE, with authorities providing no detailed official version of events and releasing few details.
