California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused President Trump of using the Justice Department to investigate him and his wife as political retaliation.
Getting into it: In a video posted Monday, Newsom said federal agents had been knocking on the doors of friends, family and former employees, “not because they found a crime” but to try to find one, and claimed Trump was targeting him because he is weighing a 2028 presidential run. The Democrat, widely seen as a top White House contender, said the pressure had now reached his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. “To get me, he’s coming after my wife,” Newsom said, calling the inquiry a political witch hunt.
People familiar with the matter pushed back on the claim that the probes were politically motivated, however, saying they were opened last year and initiated by federal law enforcement in California’s Eastern District rather than launched from Washington. The investigations reportedly stem from whistleblower reports about Siebel Newsom’s taxes and possible personal use of nonprofit funds, with one source saying the governor himself is not under investigation and no public evidence of wrongdoing has surfaced.
Newsoms wife, a documentary filmmaker, runs two gender-equity nonprofits and investigators are said to be examining her finances, including payments one of her charities made to her own film company and donations from groups with business before the state, though years of self-dealing speculation by critics has never produced public proof. She called the scrutiny “not presidential behavior” and said the couple had nothing to hide.
The Justice Department, FBI and White House declined to comment, and acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal lawyer whom Newsom tied to the timing of the inquiries, did not answer questions.
